At least 13 people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
